Terneuzen

Terneuzen is the largest municipality in Zeeland; it has 55,000 inhabitants. The town is an important regional centre. This is evident from the presence of a theatre and a hospital, the shopping facilities, and the many businesses that are established here. This business activity is largely the consequence of the presence of the docks of Terneuzen and the Canal from Ghent to Terneuzen. In the Canal zone in particular, large businesses can be found that are involved in chemical industries, transport and paper, and there are also a large number of supply and transport companies.

The Gent-Terneuzen Canal was opened in 1827. At Terneuzen two locks were built. After the construction of the canal, the municipality developed into an important trade centre.

The municipality consists of 14 places: Axel, Biervliet, Hoek, Koewacht, Overslag, Philippine, Sas van Gent, Sluiskil, Spui, Terneuzen, Westdorpe, Zaamslag, Zandstraat and Zuiddorp.
