Borsele

Borsele is a municipality of contrasts. It has an area of beautiful scenery (the Zak van Zuid-Beveland), but it also has Sloegebied, which is a large-scale industrial area and port, and includes a nuclear power station. Borsele combines tranquillity and space with a dynamic vision and industrial activity.

Borsele not only wants to be a pleasant place to live, but it also wants to be innovative. The municipality is therefore constantly working on new projects and economic development. It has more than 22,500 inhabitants and has a central position in the Province of Zeeland. It consists of the following villages: Baarland, Borssele, Driewegen, Ellewoutsdijk, ’s-Gravenpolder, ’s-Heer Abtskerke, ’s-Heerenhoek, Heinkenszand, Hoedekenskerke, Kwadendamme, Lewedorp, Nieuwdorp, Nisse, Oudelande and Ovezande. Heinkenszand and ’s-Gravenpolder, each with about 5000 inhabitants, are the two largest places.

During the restructuring process, it was decided to spell the new Municipality of Borsele with one 's'. This was done to distinguish it from Borssele village.  This name was chosen because it is one of the oldest names that occur in the area.
